Statement: Dream.Org Applauds President Biden’s Historic Act of Clemency

December 12, 2024

Today, President Biden commuted nearly 1,500 sentences and pardoned 39 Americans with nonviolent crimes, marking the largest single-day act of clemency in modern American history.

In response to this historic move, Dream.Org Chief Advocacy Officer Janos Marton issued the following statement:

“Dream.Org applauds President Biden commuting the sentences of nearly 1,500  people who are currently finishing their federal sentences under home confinement. These individuals have been working or studying in their local communities with unprecedentedly low recidivism rates. They have done their time, and it's time for their sentences to end.

We hope President Biden does not stop here. There are still thousands of people serving extremely long sentences for drug crimes that should be back home with their families. We urge the President to take up these cases, many of which have been reviewed and have been ready for the president's commutation for years.”
