Statement on the Energy Permitting Reform Act Congressional Updates

December 17, 2024

Congress has decided not to move forward with the Energy Permitting Reform Act [EPRA] or similar bipartisan permitting reform, as they negotiate the final legislative package of the 118th Congress. Stakeholders across the country and partisan lines all agree that reform is imperative to ensure affordable, reliable, and clean energy at a time when demand is surging and our infrastructure is aging.

In response of this decision, Dream.Org’s Green for All Policy Director Kyle Kammien issued the following statement:

“Despite the disappointing outcome, Dream.Org would like to thank the bipartisan group of legislators and their staff who worked tirelessly and took risks to get this legislation so close to the finish line. Their work is an example of the bold, collaborative leadership we need on complex issues like permitting reform.

However, we want to be clear that this decision has a profound impact on our future. Bipartisan permitting reform like the Energy Permitting Reform Act would have facilitated faster approvals for essential clean energy and energy infrastructure projects, reduced energy costs for everyday Americans, and created a more resilient and reliable energy system that benefits all communities. Congress walking away from a compromise leaves Americans with an energy system ill equipped to meet rising demand and facing a future of rising costs and declining reliability. We need to do better next year. ”
