Tell Congress: Restore Voting Rights!

In 48 out of 50 states and Washington DC, a person convicted of a felony loses many of their civil rights. This includes the right to vote what’s known as “Felony Disenfranchisement”. This policy is a shameful relic of the Jim Crow era, perpetuating systemic racism and silencing the voices of justice-impacted individuals. These discriminatory policies have stripped away the fundamental right to vote from an estimated 4.6 million Americans, disproportionately impacting communities of color and undermining the very fabric of our democracy.

The Democracy Restoration Act (S. 1677; H.R. 4987) is a crucial step toward ending this form of voter suppression and expanding access to the ballot box. By restoring voting rights in federal elections to all individuals with felony convictions upon release from prison, this legislation would promote political participation, human dignity, redemption, and the full restoration of citizenship.

Dream.org is proud to be partnering with the new documentary feature THE 50 to take action for Second Chance Month through this petition, which aims to amplify the Democracy Restoration Act across America.

Every day that passes without this legislation is another day that millions of Americans are denied their fundamental right to vote. We cannot claim to be a nation of second chances while continuing to disenfranchise our fellow citizens.

Sign the petition today to urge Congress to pass the Democracy Restoration Act now!

    Dear Congress,

I urge you to vote yes on the Democracy Restoration Act (S. 1677; H.R. 4987) a critical piece of legislation that would restore voting rights in federal elections to all individuals with felony convictions upon release from prison.

Felony disenfranchisement laws have a shameful history deeply intertwined with racial discrimination in America, and they continue to impact communities of color today disproportionately. By denying voting rights to millions of Americans, these policies undermine the very principles of democracy and perpetuate cycles of marginalization and recidivism.

The Democracy Restoration Act presents an opportunity to address this injustice and expand access to the ballot box. Restoring voting rights is not only a matter of political participation but also of human dignity, redemption, and the full restoration of citizenship. It is a fundamental step towards promoting successful reentry, reducing recidivism, and strengthening the social fabric of our communities.

As your constituent, I call upon you to champion this legislation and work towards its passage in the House of Representatives. By supporting the Democracy Restoration Act, you can help dismantle a draconian system of voter suppression and build a more inclusive democracy that truly represents all Americans.

Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I look forward to your leadership in advancing the Democracy Restoration Act and restoring voting rights to millions of justice-impacted individuals.
